Skype founders Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis have filed a lawsuit against Ebay, current owner of most of the shares of Skype.

Ebay confirmed its previously announced sale of Skype earlier this month, with the intention of turning over 65% of the company to investors of the Silver Lake Partners group. Ebay’s original intention was to simply buy-out Skype, pay-out its partners, and sell off the company to the investment group. However, a new development has put a crack in the sale.

The owners are claiming a Terms of Service violation based on the idea that Ebay revealed the technology powering the Skype service and technology. The suit is officially filed by the founders’ own company Joltid, the brains behind the Skype code. The company is looking for $75 million per day in damage payments. The numbers stem from Skype counting each download as copyright infringement, which estimates into costs of about $27 billion per year, as calculated by Mashable.

Skype has been known for their lawsuits as in the suit filed in the original sale of the company to Ebay. Whether or not the suit will go through profitably for the founders remains to be seen. From my own personal reasoning, I have to wonder if Skype really intends to try and back a figure that outrageous.

Pretty much every developer and designer on the planet hates I.E. 6. Nevertheless, the widely used browser must be supported somehow, right? Well, Google has come to the rescue with the introduction of the Google Chrome Framework. The basic idea behind Google Chrome is that Internet Explorer users who download the plugin can step into the new age of the internet without switching browsers. Google explains:

With Google Chrome Frame, developers can now take advantage of the latest open web technologies, even in Internet Explorer. From a faster Javascript engine, to support for current web technologies like HTML5’s offline capabilities and <canvas>, to modern CSS/Layout handling, Google Chrome Frame enables these features within IE with no additional coding or testing for different browser versions.

The plugin works by feeding off a new meta tag developers will need to include on their webpages. When the tag is detected, the framework will switch to Chrome’s own rendering web-kit, and more websites will become compatible with Internet Explorer. The plugin also includes a working testing protocol which uses the prefix cf:http://yourwebsite to test whether or not the page will render within Internet Explorer. So far, the only known issues with the current test versions are messed up printing and an invisible downloads progress window.

Office of National Statistics (ONS) latest survey has showed, around UK’s 18 million homes has internet access. The figure represents 70% of UK households. The survey also revealed that 63% of UK households get a broadband connection, compared to 56% in 2008. The figures were made through the ONS Opinions Survey that recorded 1,200 interviews (roughly) with adults over 16 existing in private households.

During 2009, the amount of adults getting online was 37.4 million. The number is a 10% increase from last year. The 16-24 age brackets got the peak level of access at 96%, though the 65-plus age group got the small level of access at 30%. Men were 8% more likely to have online throughout the past three months. It was 80% vs. 72% for women.

With an entry on a Norwegian actress, the English version of online encyclopedia Wikipedia hosted its 3 millionth articles on 17, August 2009.  The user-generated Wikipedia announced the landmark on its homepage at www.en.wikipedia.org. It said “The English-language Wikipedia thanks its contributors for creating over 3,000,000 articles!”

Wikipedia told the three millionth editorials was about 48-year-old Beate Eriksen. She is a Norwegian TV and Film actress as well as film director. It prides itself on accessing any users with a net connection to add or edit content. Currently Wikipedia hosts total 13 million articles in more than 260 languages. It is one of the most-visited sites on the web and attracts about 65 million visitors per month. It founded eight years ago.

Africa, Asia, and Middle East are going to skyrocket with Internet use in the next four years, according to a new study. The study from Forrester Research has found that about 2.2 billion individuals will be online during the next few years. It will be an increase of more than 45%. The reports have forecasted that 43% of the 2.2 billion users will be based in Asia by 2013, with 17% in China alone.,

In 2008 Forrester Research reports revealed that USA was paradise to the most Internet users, and it is followed by China, Japan, Brazil, and Germany. However, as compared to the previous figures, China will be in first place in 2013, and followed by the USA, India, Japan, and Brazil.

In a statement, Forrester Research Senior Analyst Zia Daniell Wigder said “While per capita online spending is likely to remain highest in North America, Western Europe, and the developed markets of Asia throughout the next five years.” He also said: “The shifting online population and growing spending power among Asian consumers means that Asian markets will represent a far greater percentage of the total in 2013 than they do today.”

Additionally, the analysts predicted that Middle Eastern as well as African countries, that represent just 8% of the global online users now, could have much high growth rates in upcoming years. Iran, Egypt and Nigeria are expected to see the major increases in this area according to analysts’ opinion.

Peer-to-peer download site Kazaa and Pirate Bay are back in legal form, with new subscription model. Kazaa was shut down by $150m lawsuit back in 2006, is now back as an unlimited download service with a fixed-rate monthly subscription rate.

The Pirate Bay also returned with the similar model and their new outline say “give and take”. However, the Swedish Software firm that owns the Pirate bay said that, the service would be free for majority user.

Both Kazaa and The Pirate Bay are following the example which was set by Napster, the subject of several lawsuits that eventually shut down and bankrupted the service.

The Subscription Fee
Kazaa is expected to launch this week in US with their new monthly subscribing service. For unlimited download, it will cost you $20 per month.
The Pirate Bay was once the largest illegal download site in the web was assumed by a Swedish firm named Global Gaming Factory X after the original owner was found guilty violating copyright law. Last week they hired Wayne Rosso, who is a former president of P2P site Grokster and founder of P2P site Mashboxx to help refine the new business model and strike deal. The new Pirate Bay is expected to launch in August. The firm is now developing plans a monthly charge to use the service.

The fee would be reduce if the user allows sharing their own documents or allows the service to use the storage space on their computer.

Leading social networking site Facebook has been hit by various hackers looking to paw upon users’ valuable data. Security experts say the site has faced five individual security threats in the past several days.

According to senior security advisor Rik Ferguson at Trend Microthe the site had been besieged with four malicious applications with a new variant of the Koobface virus. Those rogue applications try to rob profit-making information from the profiles of the users who open the link, whose malicious nature remained hidden on social network sites. The BBC quoted Ferguson as saying “This is not just restricted to Facebook. It’s a growing trend. Though I’m surprised it’s taken so long for social sites to be targeted”. He suggested that the free-access website, Facebook should consider policing applications. But, Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg turned down the possibility in preference for any open system.

The chief said “Our philosophy is that having an open system anyone can participate in is generally better” in a Radio 1 Newsbeat interview. In the meantime, blogger Graham Cluley and senior technology consultant at anti-virus software developers Sophos said “One of the problems is that Facebook allows anybody to write an application and third party applications are not vetted before they are released to the public.” “Even as Facebook stamps out one malignant application, it can pop up in another place.” On the other hand, security experts assure to the users very soon they can manage the situation.

After more than 600 of its computers were hacked, today Indian ministry of external affairs said that no classified information has been stolen. The devisees were infected by spyware, a bug that gets into a computer taking control of the user’s actions says Times Now. The officials said the infected computers include those in the ministry’s sensitive Pakistan section but, the ministry insists that no national secrets have been breached.

In a statement authority said that each senior official has two computers, one that connects to the web and the other for classified work, that is not connected to the net. However, that is not the first such instance of hacking. In May 2008, the MEA’s internal communication network was got to have been broken into by several Chinese hackers. If truth be told, a series of intrusions into secure systems in the ministry were then traced to China. The Indian government now thinks how they can protect this kind of activity in future.
